| Concrete X-scape (from the san mateo county times) Redwood Citys new skate park - open since mid-march - is the bright new star in Red Morton Community Park. Designed by skaters, the new park features bowls, steps and other obstacles, including a 6-foot vertical drop for daring skateboarders. For the not-so-experienced skaters, theres a smaller, shallower bowl. The $350,000 park is named after Phil Shao, a Redwood City native who died in a car accident in 1998. Shao was a pioneer in the X-Games and an advocated of skateboarding and skaters. He was slated to be the next editor of Thrasher, a skateboarding magazine based in San Francisco. About 75 to 100 skaters were expected to use the
park daily in the beginning, but city officials expect fewer skaters from
outside Redwood City to come once its been open a while. |
